| How we filtered it | Ten sites for each of the 50 states: the portal, then one each for revenue, motor vehicles, health, labor, education, courts, public safety, transportation and environment. The portal is every domain the registry types 'State or territory' that follows the naming convention every state uses (its postal code, its name, or either with a 'my' or 'e' prefix), fetched with redirects followed; where they land is the portal. Each department is the best match to a written rule on the registrant names of the state's own registry domains, then on Wikidata (P856) agency websites that sit under a domain the registry lists for the state, then on a conventional subdomain (dmv., health., dot.) that loads and whose page title says what it is. The rule, its patterns and its tie-breaks are in census/gov_rules.py and are tested; the choice is made by scripts/prepare-gov-rosters and recorded on every row, with the registrant it matched. A state with no site for a role keeps the row, blank, with the reason. |
